Neuhaus Castle Ruins near Terlan / Terlano
The legendary Castle Maultasch in the South of South Tyrol
Opening hours
Contact
Neuhaus Castle with its characteristic keep towers high above Terlano,
the sunny holiday village on the South Tyrolean Wine Road. The structure,
which was first documented in 1228, was severely damaged during the armed
conflict between the Bishop of Trento and the Counts of Tyrol in 1275-6 and was
only rebuilt in 1320.
From where comes the name?
The Neuhaus ruins owe their popular name, “
Maultasch
Castle”, to the Countess of Tyrol, Margarete of Görz-Tyrol. According to legend, the castle
was a favourite place to stay of the countess, who was born in Tyrol in 1318 and
died in Vienna in 1369. Her nickname was
Margarete Maultasch (literally “bag
mouth”). However, the origins of this name are the subject of considerable
disagreement. Only one thing is certain: a misshapen mouth or other external
disfigurement, as has generally been assumed, cannot be the reason, as
contemporary witnesses describe the countess as being of "handsome appearance".
The castle ruin is not to confound with Castle Neuhaus in Gais in the holiday region Kronplatz
